Fylely for Word

An Open Fylely button on Word's Home tab. Choose a matter, then put its facts at your cursor, drop in a clause from your firm's library, save the document to the matter, and log the time. The facts are the same fields your templates use, each shown with what is on file now.

Install it for the firm

Someone with Microsoft 365 admin rights opens the Microsoft 365 admin center, goes to Settings → Integrated apps → Upload custom apps, chooses Office Add-in, and gives this address:

https://fylely.com/word-addin/manifest.xml

They then choose who gets it (everyone, or named people). It can take a few hours to appear in Word. Nothing needs installing on anyone's computer.

Or just for yourself

If your firm allows it: save the address above as a file, open a document in Word on the web, open Add-ins on the Home tab, choose More Add-ins, then Upload My Add-in, and choose the file. Microsoft moves these menus now and then, and many firms turn this off; if the option is missing, ask whoever runs your Microsoft 365.

Signing in

The first time, press Sign in to Fylely in the pane. A small window opens: sign in to Fylely there if you are not already, then press Connect. In Word on the web the sign-in opens in a new tab; come back to the window and press Try again.

The add-in keeps a sign-in of its own, for you only. It has exactly your role's access, follows your firm's two-step sign-in and inactivity timeout, and ends when you press Sign out in the add-in or sign out other devices in Fylely's Settings. A read-only member can insert facts and clauses but not save or log time. The billing role does not read matter files, so it cannot connect.

Facts and clauses

Pressing a fact puts it at your cursor, or over what you have selected, in the formatting around it. A fact with nothing on file says so, and goes in as a marked gap like [[case / docket number — not on file]], the same mark a template prints, so a blank cannot slip through. A contact's address your firm has withheld stays withheld.

Clauses come from your firm's library and are filled in for the chosen matter, conditions included. What goes in is a copy: changing the matter later does not change the document.

Saving to the matter

Save sends what is in Word now, unsaved changes, tracked changes and comments included. If the document came from that matter, Fylely offers to save it as a new version, and the earlier version stays on the matter. Otherwise it becomes a new document, up to 25 MB. If the document got a newer version in Fylely after your copy was made, the pane asks before saving yours as a further version.

Saving leaves one small mark inside the document, so the next save knows which document it is: Fylely's own reference number for that document, and nothing about the matter, the client or your firm. It travels with the file if you send the file on, and it opens nothing: Fylely follows it only for someone signed in at your firm who can read that document.

What it can and cannot see

It reads the open document only when you press Save, and it changes the document only when you insert something or save. It reads nothing else on your computer or in your Microsoft account. Microsoft asks for permission to read and write the open document, and only that.

Which Word

Word on the web and Microsoft 365 Word for Windows and Mac. Very old versions cannot run it, and the pane says so.
