Arithmetic on the figures you enter. Whether the fee is reasonable, which liens must be paid and how much, and what your state requires a closing statement to show are for the lawyer.

How it is worked

The fee is your percentage of the whole recovery, or of the recovery after costs are repaid, as your fee agreement says. A reduction you agreed to comes off the fee. Costs and liens are listed one by one, and the client’s net is the recovery less each rounded line, so the printed statement always adds up.

ABA Model Rule 1.5(c), and most states’ versions of it, ask for a written statement at the end of a contingent-fee matter showing the outcome, the remittance to the client and how it was worked out. Check what your state’s rule adds. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
