The sum and the dates

The rate

From the statute, the judgment or the contract. Nothing is looked up: a post-judgment rate that resets each year goes in as a change on each reset date.

Payments received

Each payment goes first to the interest owed on its date, then to the sum itself.

None entered.

Enter the sum owed.

Interest runs from the start date to the end date, counting the end date but not the start. Each stretch is rounded to the cent. Some courts count differently, apply payments to principal first, or set a rate that changes on its own schedule — check the rule that governs your matter.

How it is worked

Each stretch between two events — a change of rate, a payment, an anniversary when interest compounds — earns the sum owed times the rate times its days over the year you chose: 365, 360, or the days in that calendar year. Each stretch is rounded to the cent, so the schedule adds up to the total.

A payment goes first to the interest owed on its date and then to the sum itself, the United States Rule most courts apply. Interest left unpaid earns no interest unless you choose yearly compounding, when it is added to the sum on each anniversary of the start date.

Nothing is looked up: the rate is yours. A post-judgment rate that resets every year goes in as a change on each reset date. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
