Fylely for criminal law
A criminal file that keeps the offer, the conditions and the clock straight
Fylely is practice software for solo and small firms. A criminal matter has its own tabs: the charges, custody and release, the offers made and what your client told you to do, the delay count, and what the sentence requires. Wording follows where the matter is: a Canadian file reads Defence, Crown and record suspension, and a US file reads Defense, the prosecution and expungement or sealing.
On a criminal law matter
- Charges
- Each count with what is charged, the statute, grade, plea, disposition and next appearance.
- Custody, release and conditions
- Whether your client is in custody or released, where and on what terms, and each release condition. Complainants, co-accused, witnesses and sureties are on the file and in your conflict search.
- Offers and instructions
- Each plea offer with the date and way it was conveyed to your client, and the instructions they gave. Fylely will not record instructions on an offer you have not yet conveyed.
- The delay count
- Days from the start of the clock to its end or today, less the periods you exclude (delay waived or caused by the defence, exceptional events, or other time), against a ceiling you enter, with the day the count would reach it. Fylely counts the days; it never decides what the limit is.
- Sentence and record
- What the sentence requires, term by term, and the date your client can apply to clear their record.
- Court-date reminders
- Your client is reminded of each court date by email, and by text as well once the firm has set up texting. The text never names the matter.
- Court day
- Today’s hearings across every file, with the people to call, on one page you can print before you leave for court.
- Legal aid certificates and court appointments
- Each certificate or appointment on the matter, the hours granted on it block by block, and the hours worked from your own time entries counted against them, with a warning as the hours run low or the certificate nears its end, and a letter to ask for more.
- Starter letters
- An offer conveyed to the client, a disclosure request and a release-conditions letter to start from, filled from the file, with the operative wording left in brackets for you to write.
And on every matter
- Deadlines and hearings on one morning board, with the date you entered and nothing invented.
- Tasks, documents, notes, contacts, the other side and their counsel, and a conflict search across every name on every file.
- Time in hours and minutes, expenses, invoices, payment links, and a trust ledger reconciled against each bank statement.
- A private client portal: messages, and an upload link for the documents you are waiting on.
- Letters and templates filled from the file, signatures built in, and the whole matter as one printable file.
Who it is not for
- A firm that wants to bill a legal aid plan from its practice software. Fylely tracks hours against each certificate; the account still goes in through the plan’s own portal.
What Fylely does not do
- Decide any time limit, whether for delay, a speedy trial or a limitation. It counts the days you record against the ceiling you enter.
- Bill a legal aid plan or a court directly.
- E-file with any court.
Moving your files
Matters, contacts, time, deadlines, hearings and unpaid invoices come across as spreadsheet (CSV) exports from your current system, and you see every row before anything is saved. If you would rather not map the columns yourself, send us the exports once you have an account and we prepare them for you to import, at no charge.
You do not have to move everything at once: open your next new matter in Fylely and leave the old files where they are until they close. The full account of what comes across and what does not is on Switching to Fylely.
